Silent Worship
Watch on YouTube:
This is my arrangement of "Silent Worship" by Handel, for flute and piano.

Ever since I heard a recording (on a vinyl LP) of the English Tenor, David Hughes singing this, over 40 years ago, I thought it would make a lovely solo for flute and piano.

I have kept the melody simple and unaltered, just moving it up an octave now and then, and added some undulating quaver (eighth note) movement in the piano part at the repeat of the melody to achieve interest for the listener.

I hope someone enjoys playing this simple yet gorgeous melody!

By the way, tissues will be needed when reading the lines of the chorus - "Though I mean nothing to her - Though she will rarely look at me, And though I could never woo her, I love her till I die!"

Fresh ideas in flute music
In 1628, Handel composed this music as an Air for his opera "Tolomeo" ("Ptolemy, King of Egypt"). In 1928, poet and composer Arthur Somervell wrote lyrics and set them to the music.

He named his poem "Silent Worship" and it began with the lines: "Did you not hear my Lady, Go down the garden singing?"....
and continued....

Blackbird and thrush were silent
To hear the alleys ringing

Oh, saw you not my lady
Out in the garden there
Shaming the rose and lily
For she is twice as fair

Though I am nothing to her
Though she must rarely look at me
Though I can never woo her
I'll love her 'till I die
